Welcome to the world of home surveillance and security systems. First-time buyers of surveillance equipment will feel intimidated by the long list of technical jargon, but don't fret. This guide will help you navigate the waters until you find the right security cameras and systems for you, your home, and your family.

Types of home surveillance systems

First off, we need to figure out the type of home surveillance system you're looking for. There are two types available in the market: indoor and outdoor.

  • Indoor home surveillance - For indoor use, this type of system usually produces high quality images and includes cameras used to keep an eye on one or multiple rooms in your home. You can use this to monitor house sitters, baby sitters, and other goings on in your home while you're away.
  • Outdoor home surveillance - Outdoor cameras vary in size depending on purpose and are built to withstand the forces of nature. You usually use this to prevent break-ins, with the more obvious cameras proving to be beneficial. Like indoor cameras, you can use one outdoor camera to monitor a specific area or use several to keep an eye on the whole property.

Types of cameras

There are several types of cameras, each with their own sets of advantages and disadvantages.

  • Dome - Dome cameras like the 4MP IP HD Dome Security Camera are discreet and typically used indoors. There are certain lens limitations, however, and you won't be able to easily change its field of view.
  • Bullet - Built with swivel function and are largely used for outdoor surveillance, bullet cameras like the IP HD 3PM Bullet Security Camera are subject to vandalism. This is why bullet cameras are often installed beyond a person's reach. Bullet cameras are usually mounted in corners due to its swivel feature.

There are two other types of cameras: box and spy/hidden, but we highly recommend either dome or bullet cameras (or a mixture of both) for your home for maximum protection.

 Equipment Features

Like normal cameras, security cameras come in wide variety with different features.  You'll encounter the following as you shop for your own home surveillance system.

  • Wired and wireless

    • Wireless cameras are usually discreet and flexible, but contrary to its name, these cameras aren't really wireless. They still need a power cable to run, but don't need wires to transmit signals. The downside of wireless cameras is that the signal can be interrupted by Wi-Fi.
    • Wired cameras, on the other hand, are less discreet and harder to install. The good thing, however, is that they produce better images and provide stable service. If you're constructing a new home, you might want to consider getting wired cameras as they can be built into the walls.
  • Resolution - As you'll only be using the home surveillance system for your home, you don’t necessarily need the most expensive high-resolution cameras.
  • Coverage - Different camera lens cover different amounts of area. Be sure to check the coverage before buying. Wide-angle lenses are used to cover larger spaces, while pan-tilt-zoom cameras are optimal if you want a 360-degree view. For outdoor use, look for cameras with an automatic iris so it can adjust to different levels of light.
