An advanced digital video recorder (DVR) or network video recorder (NVR)—with separate channels to support four to 32 individual video cameras—is the heart of any modern video security surveillance system. A new DVR or NVR makes an excellent gift for anyone who has already invested in a security system, but who might enjoy owning an upgraded system. Perhaps your gift recipient presently operates a system with fewer cameras than the ideal number needed to provide complete surveillance of his or her home or office. Or maybe they’re ready for new cameras featuring today’s exceptional high-definition clarity. Such cameras must be supported by a recorder designed to handle these data-rich image files. To upgrade an existing system, it’s not enough to invest in newer, higher-resolution cameras. You’ll also need a DVR or NVR capable of processing and displaying signals coming from these cameras. Additionally, recorders differ in terms of the number of camera feeds they can accept. Look for recorders with anywhere from four to 32 channels. A small home or office may require no more than four cameras to provide adequate coverage. But such a system leaves no room for future expansion, should the need arise. Storage is another consideration. Newer recorders offer a large amount of built-in storage, plus the ability to add removable storage devices, such as external hard drives, memory sticks, or SD cards, for quick back-ups of important video files.
